For another look at this year’s MoCCA Fest, I give you Danny Lerner. Danny just joined us at the Graphic Universe office. This was his first MoCCA Fest, so he bring a unique perspective to the event.

The 2011 Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art (MoCCA) Festival was held on April 9th and 10th at the historic 69th Regiment Armory in Manhattan. The event offered an arsenal of color and inspiration, brimming with authors and illustrators, publishers and fans of comics and graphic novels.

For Graphic Universe the event was productive and lively. Several Lerner authors and illustrators were on hand for signings and promotions including the talented author/illustrator duo of Colleen AF Venable and Stephanie Yue who brought us the popular series Guinea PIG, Pet Shop Private Eye. Also, gifted and versatile artist Yuko Ota, illustrator of both The Secret Ghost and Detective Frankenstein (from the Twisted Journeys series) was in attendance.
Although small in size and scope compared to the behemoth New York Comic Con held in October and the even bigger San Diego Comic-Con, the MoCCA Fest offers a unique opportunity for Graphic Universe to scout an exciting crop of up and coming artists who just might become the next future success stories in the comic world. And Graphic Universe is eager to play a vital part in that process.

What’s more fun than a live comic reading by Colleen AF Venable and Stephanie Yue?  A live comic reading by Colleen AF Venable and Stephanie Yue AND a bunch of kids!

Several young Guinea Pig fans took part in the reading of The Ferret’s a Foot, playing such roles as Gerry the snake and numerous goldfish.  They were excellent readers, everyone!

A cartooning workshop followed, in which everyone invented their own character.  Some favorites were: the pear who rides a motorcycle, the penguin who likes cheese and Salsa Man (and his arch rival Ketchup Man).

We had a blast.  Much thanks to Word, for hosting the event and providing these photos.

Can you tell I’m excited about The Ferret’s a Foot?  Colleen  gave me these pins, and I will wear them proudly to the New York City release party!  If you’re in the neighborhood, I hope you’ll join me there.

THE FERRET’S A FOOT Book Release Party & Workshop
March 27, 2011, 1:30pm
WORD Bookstore in Brooklyn, NY

An afternoon of a silly theatrical reading and a hands-on comics workshop for kids with Colleen AF Venable and Stephanie Yue.  Hosted by the awesome WORD Bookstore in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. RSVP on Facebook!

Here are the details from Colleen:

Come for the hamster voices, stay for the comics-making!

Stephanie and I are doing a super fun event to celebrate the release of book three of the Guinea PIG, Pet Shop Private Eye series, The Ferret’s a Foot. And we would love love love if you could make it!

The event is both a dramatic reading of a little bit of book 3 (if anyone has always wanted to be a fish or finch or comically slow turtle just let me know!) but we’re also going to be doing a hands on workshop for kids and kids-at-heart about how to make their own comics. We even promise it’ll be entertaining for all you taller folk. And if that doesn’t make you want to come, we’ll have snacks. SNACKS!
